UNDERBELLY | The Other Side of Fashion Week

WORDS | Moeima Dukuly

There it is.

The home stretch and the temporary sigh of relief as fashion month comes to a close.

It’s all become pretty standard – models, collections, designers, the parties, who’s front row. Street style by New York, London, Milano and Paris. Backstage chaos. Photographer’s pit.  Been there, seen that. Every season.

But there’s always something below the familiarity and the shine of a world like fashion. Documentarian Salome Oggenfuss pokes around at said underbelly, with her film “The Other Side of Fashion Week”. Highlighting model photographers driven by a lust of beauty, Oggenfuss follows them onto the streets of Paris and New York. With only 48 hours left – she is incredibly close to raising the funds she needs to expose another side to a world in desperate need of perspective and exposure.

“I find it interesting how photographers use cameras as tools to gain access to a world they do not naturally belong to. They seek connections with other people – in this case, some of the most beautiful women in the world. I wanted to look at the effect that beauty has on people, and make a story that revolved around the human need to belong and connect, and how modern technology plays a part in that. ” – as quoted from her Kickstarter.

On her Kickstarter you will find the trailer to the documentary – a film that parts the glittering mist that surrounds the fashion world and the men drawn to women who lie somewhere between hanger, goddess, dreamgirl or mannequin. Obsessed with the hobby of capturing beauty.

XO joins model Kel Markey in promoting and supporting this film – so turn out those pockets to support something we could all use a dose of: a new reality.

MUSIC | #Ones2watch Leah McFall

unnamed

Words | Le’Keisha Sims

Meet Leah McFall, one of the UK’s newest bright pop darlings. Fresh off her season 2 appearance on The Voice UK, Leah has slowly been teasing new music, hinting at her hotly anticipated debut album. You see Leah has two rules about Pop:

Rule 1: Pop moves quickly. “I get people stopping me on the tube,” smiles Leah McFall, less than twelve months after she found herself propelled deep into the national consciousness. “And they say: ‘What happened to you?’”

Rule 2: Pop moves quickly, but you can’t rush it. So while Leah may have become a household name behind the scenes Leah had been making music, learning her craft and even putting out her own music since childhood, and she had no intention of going for a quick, easy, rush-released debut.

So here we are with her debut single Home featuring Will.i.am, inspired by her old stomping grounds of Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland. “I’ve lived away for five years,” she explains, “and when you start traveling around the world you realise how beautiful Ireland is. However amazing the rest of the world might be, you can’t replace the feeling of that place you grew up in……It now feels like my dreamworld is where I grew up” she smiles. “And that’s the place I can still escape to.”

Watch the video for Home below and keep up with all of Leah’s adventures on Twitter and Facebook.

Home was released July 27th via Capitol Records

AW14LOOK9_zps4e9e933e

With just ten days until LCM, London menswear label BEAU Homme  tease their AW 14 collection with a new a new video entitled ‘Fourth Dimension of Thought”. Directed and edited by Sean Lennon, the video gives us a in depth insight into the collection and the creative process that goes into each garment.  “The Fourth Dimension of Thought” is a tribute to the independent thinker, intent on a thoughtful response rather than a mere reaction. The collection is an endorsement of the noble pursuit of learning and its capability to expand realities. Through inventive fabrications and constructions, BEAU Homme contemplates the possibilities of what may be rather than the freedom of the dream.
